Luowen and Lashé's Escape

Blood Canticle

Rowan’s flight with the Taltos child possessed by Lasher marks a turning point in her life with Michael: acting to protect the child, she abandons her husband and becomes entangled in a chain of violence that she later calls a dreadful error.

The decision to leave

Rowan explains that the child had possessed the body of Michael’s child, while the child’s true soul had gone to Heaven. She believed Michael would not stop until he had killed the creature, and feared that others would destroy it as well. Thinking first of its survival, she fled with it and left Michael behind. In retrospect, she names this choice a dreadful error, distinguishing her protective intention from the terrible consequences that followed.

A dangerous effort to understand the child

At first, Rowan tried to direct the child into laboratories and hospitals, using her medical authority to arrange tests and secretly send material to a laboratory in San Francisco. She miscarried repeatedly as the child drained her milk, and soon lost control of it. The creature sought two ends: recovering its Taltos memories and fathering a female with whom it could reproduce.

As heir to the Mayfair Legacy, Rowan drew on foreign accounts to finance their travels while staying ahead of family members searching for her. Memories returned to the child in the glen at Donnelaith, after which it became desperate to return to the United States. Rowan chose Houston as a place where she could study it and acquire laboratory equipment without attracting notice. The city’s medical institutions seemed to make her research possible, but the arrangement instead gave the creature room to leave her tied up, deprived of food, and near insanity.

The flight’s consequences

Much later, Rowan learned that the creature had been making short trips to New Orleans to mate with Mayfair women. Its victims died after miscarrying, and the family panicked as women began dying one after another. Unable to find Rowan, who had abandoned Michael and was now a prisoner, the family placed Mayfair women under armed guard. The creature returned to First Street and nearly reached Mona.

Rowan’s flight thus reversed its original protective purpose. Her effort to keep the child alive and study it separated her from Michael, left her vulnerable to the creature, and enabled a widening threat to the Mayfair women. Her later account makes clear that she eventually understood both the child’s aims and the catastrophic cost of her decision.

Narrative significance

The episode is recalled by Rowan as part of her explanation of the child’s history. Its central conflict is the gap between the rescue she intended and the danger her flight unleashed: the creature she sought to protect became a threat to her, to Michael’s family, and to Mayfair women beyond their household. Her admission that the choice was a dreadful error gives the escape its retrospective weight.
